Congregational Partnerships

When you think of Caritas, you probably think of our primary mission - providing food and emergency assistance to our neighbors in need - something the Waco community of faith has generously supported for many years. But you may not think of Caritas as a resource partner to help you develop education and mission-oriented programming for adults, teens and children in your congregation.

Every day at Caritas we see faces of people who struggle with hunger ("food insecurity") issues. The immensity of food insecurity - in Central Texas alone - also can feel overwhelming to those who have never experienced it. Caritas can help you impart a greater understanding of the causes and the ways to address this challenging concern.

Here are some ways we can partner with your congregation:

1. Tours of Caritas. We would love to show members of your congregation (especially mission and benevolence committee members) firsthand how we serve those in need.

2. Mission Activities. We can provide hands-on helping activities for your congregation in our pantry (where they can package and sort foods and give food to clients) and in our thrift stores. They will learn what the Caritas staff does, why we do it, and why there is a need for such services. We also encourage children to come and see how Caritas helps people. (Children may bring collected food and donated items and experience how their donations are distributed.)

3. Educational Opportunities. Caritas is now partnering with the Texas Hunger Initiative and the Baylor University School of Social Work to address the causes of food insecurity and poverty and effectively address them. We can work with your congregation to provide educational opportunities - either at Caritas or at your own facilities - that increase understanding of these important issues.

4. Resources for Worship. Caritas is also working with Seeds of Hope Publishers to offer worship resources that will help you to teach, inspire and motivate your entire congregation to gently hold the needs of impoverished people in the forefront of their minds.

5. Food Drives. Throughout the year, Caritas initiates a variety of special and ongoing drives and programs to collect food and other items for the most marginalized in Waco. We invite you to participate in these efforts.

We would be delighted to hear from you about your interest in forging a meaningful relationship between Caritas and your congregation. Please contact Buddy Edwards at caritas@grandecom.net or 254-722-7698 for more information. And when you think of Caritas, remember that we can be a vital resource for you!

Support from local congregations in our community plays a very important role in helping Caritas fulfill its mission of "providing urgent support to people in need in our community". We want to thank these congregations for their generosity and support in 2013.
